The joys of being in Austin are:
1)having 25 handouts of sororities and frats by the end of the day
2)overly priced books
3)new classes
4)studying late nights, and purposely waking early before class to study again
5)go out to fun places!
6)seeing old and whacky friends^^
7)anymore?

whew! this is a super long update, but there's also one thing i'd like to point out before i bury myself in books/homework/studying again:
yesterday i went for training at the international office and we were doing cross cultural training. this grad student from saudi arabia showed us a video about international student's experiences in the US(he was doing it for his thesis). what i found interesting was how different America is to an international. one girl from iceland, came into her room and saw that her roommate brought things like a TV, VCR, DVD player, computer etc....she said that back in her home country they never really had things like that. in america when u go to a grocery store u have super sized servings for things like chips, cereal, ice cream and whatnot. and u have a ton of variety to choose from, like 1% milk, 2% milk, whole milk, soy milk, different flavors etc....it was just overwhelming for this girl. and then it hit me...i sometimes forget how fortunte it is to live in the US.
i mean look at the wealth of resources we have in the US. i dont think we ever realize how fortuntate we are until, they're taken away. this video was great b/c it was kinda like a reminder to not take things for granted. i learned so much yesterday. I could also relate to those international students b/c i've been out of this country before and i know how it's like. at first it's wonderful! but u stay there longer and then u begin to feel somewhat odd, u know, different, and left out. that's b/c people everywhere behave, act, think, dress, eat differently from what you're most familiar w/. it's not in your zone of comfort and definitely not like home. it's difficult, but i like the challenge! another thing to keep in mind, the girl said, was that u have to adjust to your surroundings and not the other way around.
i'd also like to point out that when they come here they are hit by what one would call a "cultural shock". so the video didnt teach us to be sensitive about their issues, but to be aware of them and to be open and friendly. Those students brought along their experiences, knowledge and stories of their home country. They are willing to share them and i believe each of them has an interesting story to tell, which is one of the reasons why i chose to work at the international office. (or yea for the joker, b/c i'm nosy! and what also got me back up here to update!)
